East Coast Camping 2014: Vermont

Our trip up the East coast was perfectly timed.  Back in January I requested a week off in late July, specifically for my brother's Air Force flight school graduation.  But the date of his graduation changed and Clark and I decided we would instead use this week of vacation as an opportunity to travel back up the coast and revisit some of our favorite sites in Maine.  Amazingly, the Chad and Janet Tobler family were planning a trip back to the East coast and our dates were going to overlap.  IT WAS FATE! But I'll get to our visit with the now Houston Toblers in another post.

So, we decided that the first day of our vacation we would drive up to to Southern Vermont and camp for a night before heading over to Maine to meet up with family.  Clark has officially told the University of Vermont that he will not be attending their school in the fall, and so even though we agreed we wouldn't visit Burlington in Northern Vermont (we don't want to know what we're missing out on and potentially regret our decision) we agreed that Bennington in Southern Vermont would be an appropriate place to visit since it is still a few hours away from Burlington. We got off to an early start and were anticipating arriving at our camp site around 3 pm, allowing us plenty of time to explore the surrounding areas.  But the New Jersey Turnpike had another idea in store for us:

Traffic was stop and go for at least 45 minutes. I mean barely moving.  And then traffic all together stopped.  Sporadic volley ball games and football games ensued for roughly 1.5 hours in front of and behind us, and then everyone jumped back into their vehicles so we could continue moving at a snails pace for another 45 minutes.  It. Was. Awful.  I can't say enough bad things about the NJT, so I won't even start.  Even though I want to.

We did our best to get through New Jersey as quickly as possible, and when we got to Albany, NY we stopped for Dinosaur BBQ.  Much needed nourishment for two very irritable travelers.  We arrived at our campsite around 6:30, set up camp, and explored the surrounding areas with the little sunlight we had left. Luckily, the location of the camp site was so beautiful it helped us to forget about our terribly long, frustrating journey.

All campsites were located around a pond just a quarter mile from an old ski resort.

There were several small lakes within walking distance, free canoes and kayaks to use at our leisure. Sadly, we didn't get the chance to use them.

Not a whole lot of information to read, but we didn't mind.

The old, abandoned ski resort.  We saw several of these located along our drive the next day. Resorts once popular in days gone by, now sitting quite lonely off Route 9.

The next day we packed up camp and headed out to our next destination: Standish, Maine.  Along the way we passed numerous over-sized Adirondack chairs, and we just had to stop for some pictures in Wilmington, VT.
We also stopped at the Chelsea Royal Diner in Brattleboro, VT for a delicious breakfast.

Hello, cholesterol.  It's so nice to taste you again.  I took the week off from being vegetarian (oh yeah, I became vegetarian a few months ago, my cholesterol is too high for my liking).  There was just no way to manage my weakness for meats and seafood on this trip.

The diner was packed. I'm so glad we stopped.

We thoroughly enjoyed the limited time we spent in Vermont. It was so amazingly beautiful.  So green and charming. Maybe someday we'll get another opportunity to return to Bennington.  We missed out on the only Covered Bridge Museum in the world. Dang it.
Until next time!

The 4th

The day mainly consisted of running and watching World Cup matches.  Germany vs. France and then Brazil vs. Columbia.  The Germany and France game wasn't nearly as exciting mainly because no one exchanged soaked sweaty jerseys after the final whistle.

James Rodriguez and David Luiz before the swap:

And after:

Right after this happened I said aloud: Ok, now exchange shorts!
Clark thought that was hilarious. It didn't happen, but it would have been amazing.

Then Clark had to leave for work and I met some friends down on the Ben Franklin Parkway for the Philly 4th of July Jam.

Way too many people everywhere.  At some point there was a "scuffle" in the crowd not too far from where we were sitting on the grass.  Throngs of people started running away and we heard people yelling, "They're shooting, they're shooting!!" So, we started to run away, too.  Nicki Minaj stopped her set briefly and things were brought under control.  Thankfully, there was not a shooting, though I don't think anyone knows exactly what went on.

And here we have The Roots? Or DJ Jazzy Jeff?  Or was it Ed Sheeran by this point?  Hard to say since the stage just appears to be a bright fireball of light....

And finally, around 11:15 pm, we had some fireworks!

Even though Columbia lost, it was a pretty great day.

Too close for comfort

We had a freak thunderstorm come through Thursday evening.  It tore down this tree on our street and crushed the hood and windshield of the car underneath.  We were parked right behind this unfortunate vehicle. Though branches were strewn all about our car, we were able to move them and manuever our car from this parking spot to a different, safer spot.  Whew.
We're feeling very grateful that our only vehicle is still in one piece.  If it had been severely damaged/totaled I probably would have curled up in fetal position and cried for days.

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

Last Tuesday, on the hottest day of the year to date, we had a date day. I now have Tuesdays off because I'm supposed to work either long days or Saturdays.  But that's not important. And I'll probably get to that in a later post.  The important thing is: we got out and did something! We finally got over to South Street and visited the Philadelphia Magic Gardens. We also went to the Reading Terminal Market for lunch and found a little storefront that has really good donuts. Finally. I guess Philadelphia isn't so bad, after all.

It was pretty impressive.  I highly recommend it if anyone ever visits Philadelphia.

Surprise Visitor

A couple of weeks ago a good friend of ours dropped by.  He was visiting a friend in NYC and they were awesome enough to come down and spend a night with us.   Brandon is second from left, Kai is on the far left.  It was Brandon's wedding last November that Clark attended in Hawaii.  Clark met Kai in Hawaii as well.

These guys like to have fun, so we tried to find them some bars in the city where they could sip on some tasty brews.  Afterwards, we went and ran the steps at the Art Museum.

We had a ton of fun with these guys! Thanks for the visit and for getting us to go out on a work night!

Gems

Sorry, I just had to post these phone photos from our most recent trip that I've already blogged about.  I promise I'll get over the trip soon.

First day in Ireland, after not sleeping all night on the flight.

                                               First Meal: Bangers and Mash

Tour of an old church (our second day, not the first.  We barely made it through that first meal with Ivan and Joanne)

Shepard's Pie and three other sides with non-alcoholic wine....YES! And some very lively gift shop shopping

Even President Obama wanted us to have a pasty

Touring around, eating, taking pictures of and with castles.

A beautiful thatched roof home in Adare

Just stunning

A creepy mannequin at the potato famine cottage...begging Clark for some potatoes, I'm guessing

The Slea Head loop was beautiful but incredibly windy!

Missed walking through the Blarney Castle by just a few minutes.

But the Cahir Castle made up for our misfortune

From a gas station.  Yes, it was AMAZING

Dinner at a covered outdoor food court in London.

The financial district and some fun art in our hotel

Indian food on Brick Lane...we might have gotten way too much...luckily Clark's appetite is that of three people so not much went to waste

Peaceful protesting

Walking through some streets of London on our Jack the Ripper Tour.  It's on this tour we found out that Hiltler did not bomb this white church during WWII because he liked the architecture too much.

Gotta love Paris' CDG airport. Reclining seats so you can watch planes come and go.

Or just take a nap.
